Sanding the floor

By ferg at 9:46 am on Monday, August 31, 2009

Spent the last few days sanding the floor. This is seriously hard work. So much so that I’ve not even taken a single picture to put here. How sad is that? Anyway the floors will look good. I now have to get the floors slik smooth, get a coat of oil on, and then cover in hardboard so the builders do not trampel all over them. Oh and wire my office up too!

Bath is in…

By ferg at 9:05 pm on Tuesday, August 25, 2009

Our Japanese style bath was fitted last week. This is an Omnitub which we saw at the Grand designs show. It’s so deep that we’ve had to add a step on the left side.

It will eventually be tiled as the rest of the bathroom will be.

Air Source Heat Pump

By ferg at 8:22 am on Sunday, August 23, 2009

The air source heat pump was installed last week.

We have two internal units. Here’s the one upstairs (2.5Kw). It’s coverless at the moment until the wall is plastered.

The external unit is whisper quiet. I really did not realise that it was running until I noticed the fan was going around!

Office progress

By ferg at 8:18 am on Sunday, August 23, 2009

I’ve made real progress (finally) with the shed! I got the majority of the insulation in yesterday, and I’ll hopefully get to the stage that I can wire and network next week.

For posterity’s sake I added a DPM attached with contact adhesive to the bricks and run up the wall. I did this as the shed is a single skin brick wall and with a lot of rain it’s possible that water could penetrate this. Normally a cavity wall allows rain to run down the inside of the outside skin.

The insulation was attached using 8mm 120 mm hammer in fixings through a 1×2 batten. With a blob of silicon sealant to preserve the vapour membrane in the insulation. The battens will be used to add t&g paneling when the wiring is done!

For the floor I had 100 mm non-foil Kingspan insulation, followed by DPM, and then 22mm t&g flooring chipboard.

A walk in the garden / Un pti’ tour dans le jardin

By LN at 2:33 pm on Friday, August 21, 2009

Do you know any of those flowers ? (Dites moi si vous connaissez ces fleurs!)

The garden is still quite messy and very wild. However, every month there are new flowers appearing. I’m trying to keep track of where they are to make sure we don’t get rid of them once we decide to do something from the garden…
I love flowers but don’t really know much about them. If you recognise any of those and know their names, let me know :

This one is the passiflore (passion flower I think ?) – I love them – but I think there are in the neighbour’s garden. Fortunately some of them lean over the fence :-)

There are also tons of apples !

By ferg at 9:16 pm on Wednesday, August 19, 2009

To keep costs down and preserve the character we are only replacing the old steel windows in the utility room, and adding a new window in the bathroom.

Some progress with the office and one of the bedrooms / Ca avance pour le bureau et une des chambres

By LN at 3:13 pm on Tuesday, August 18, 2009

We are not wasting any time : I have now painted one of the bedrooms. Hopefully the builders won’t make too much of a mess while putting the skirting boards and architraves or while repairing the windows or while repointing the chimney…

And the office has now a door ! It was hard work, believe me. I could have never had the patience to do this ! But someone did ! It had to be customised – both the frame and each pane of the door (it’s a stable door). It took a long time but here is the result…late on Sunday night) :

Oak beams finished and in place

By ferg at 5:53 pm on Wednesday, August 12, 2009

The last of the oak beams were placed yesterday. These are the ones that hold up the floor above. The original builder obviously weighed very little, as previously even I could make the floor shake….!

To try to keep them looking as original (what does that mean?) we have fixed them with some heavy plates. These will be painted gloss black eventually. It would have been better to joint them, but these are 2 year old oak beams, not green, and would have been hard to work. We used old oak rather than green, so they do not twist too much.

What progress after a week away? / Quel avancement apres une semaine de vacances?

By LN at 2:21 pm on Sunday, August 9, 2009

Well, it’s still a bit of a mess and a real building site – no change here !

But the top floor is now fully rendered (the render is still drying so we’ll see what colour will come up eventually). Here are views of the back and front :

And it is not raining in the kitchen anymore : the house has now a roof everywhere. Also watch out the Velux windows which will bring more light in the kitchen:

Inside, the ceiling insulation and boards are almost finished:

The bedrooms are being plastered. We’d better start “argueing” about what paint colour to choose :-) and book a floor sander for one of these coming weekend.
