Insulation

By ferg at 8:38 pm on Wednesday, June 17, 2009

The first lot of insulation was delivered the other day. This is the 100mm Tuff-R Cellotex that is going inbetween all the joists and timbers in the wall.

Insulation

The first fix wiring is going on here, and then a second layer of 75mm plasterboard bonded Cellotex will finish it off.

Further excavation of the Inglenook

By ferg at 9:45 pm on Friday, June 12, 2009

The inglenook fireplace appears to have had at least four incarnations over the years.

We originally thought that we’d just need to remove the brick infill and our lovely Inglenook would be waiting for a wood burning stove. However once we’d removed this we found another brick infill which looks almost as if it was the base for some sort of cast iron range.

We removed this, and found yet another brick support. What this was for we do not know, but it’s pretty knackered and built off rubble. What seems to be a theme for the builder(s) of this house in years past.

Inglenook

At this stage we really do need some supports.

The structural engineer is now saying we need some steel beams across here, with some concrete lintels to form a platform to hold the chimney up.

Here’s the bathroom roof starting to take shape. Unfortunately the sample tiles for Conservation office approval appear to have got lost, so it could be a while before we move from here.

By ferg at 8:46 pm on Tuesday, June 2, 2009

I’m feeling quite pleased that we’ve actually moved further on from demolition and started laying bricks!

Here’s the new bathroom extension starting to take shape:

.and a few days later the new bathroom floor appears!

Although the side of the building had to go first! Let’s hope no rain soon.

brick oven next to the fireplace

By ferg at 8:41 pm on Tuesday, June 2, 2009

Here’s some more piccies of that quite strange brick structure that we found in the bottom of that void!

Brick oven?

Brick oven?

Brick oven?

Since it is next to the fireplace we can only suspect that it is some sort of bread oven? Apparently these were fairly common. Still that’s quite a distance for the heat to travel.

For some reference here’s an earlier picture from before that wall came down. The step ladder is in front of the void.
